AU volleyball team splits pair at Empire 8 tournament

ITHACA, NY -- The Alfred University volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday at the Empire 8 Conference crossover tournament, hosted by Ithaca College.

The Saxons (6-18, 1-5 Empire 8) defeated Utica 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-10) before falling to Stevens in three games (25-17, 25-5, 25-7).

In the Utica match, AU was paced by freshman Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) with 11 kills and three digs and senior Stephanie Miller (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) with 11 kills. Freshman Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had 19 assists and six digs; freshman Brittany Anselment (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had three service aces and six digs; junior Emily Crosby (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 10 digs; and freshman Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had two blocks.

Against Stevens, Miller had two kills and three digs; freshman Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had seven digs; Wood had a kill, five digs and a block, and Gallipeau had three assists and four digs.

The tournament continues Saturday, with AU taking on Ithaca at noon and Hartwick at 2:30.
