AU swimming and diving teams split dual meet with Naz

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s swimming and diving team opened its 2010-11 season with a 128-59 victory over visiting Nazareth College Saturday afternoon. The AU women’s team lost to Nazareth, 138-90.

Sophomore Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and seniors Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) and Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) each won two events for the Saxon men’s team. Chapman won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:21.27) and 500-yard free (5:01.27); Olsen won the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.09) and 100-yard freestyle (48.44 seconds); and Mix took the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.05) and 100-yard butterfly (54.04 seconds).

Other winners for the Alfred men were: freshman Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.52 seconds); freshman Kyle Kraeger (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) in the 100-yard backstroke (56.47 seconds); and junior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.58).

Alfred’s team of Kraeger, Dolben, freshman Brett Irwin and senior Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) won the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.99) and Olsen, Mix, Chapman and Sowinski won the 400-yard free relay (3:18.99).

Sophomore Kylie Smith (Abington, PA/Abington) paced the AU women with a sweep of the diving competition. Smith won 1-meter diving with 212.05 points and 3-meter diving with 175.55.

Senior Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia) was third in the 1,000-yard free (12:09.51) and 500-yard free (5:56.66); senior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was second in the 50-yard free (25.74 seconds) and 100-yard free (57.21 seconds); freshman Lauren Elberty (Flemington, NJ) was second in 1-meter diving (153.15); sophomore Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.08); and freshman Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell) was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.59).

The AU women’s team of freshman Paige Citarella (West Islip, NY/West Islip), Remchuk, Matich and Blair was second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:58.84).

AU is in action next on Saturday, Nov. 30, at noon at the Geneseo Invitational.
