Alfred University football team makes return to national rankings

ALFRED, NY – A victory over previously unbeaten St. John Fisher has returned the Alfred University football team to the national Division III rankings.

Alfred (6-1, 3-0 Empire 8) is ranked 20th in this week’s national poll and 25th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll. The Saxons, ranked most of the year in both the and AFCA polls, had fallen out of the rankings after losing at RPI Oct. 16.

Fisher was ranked 17th and 19th, respectively, in the AFCA and polls before Saturday’s 42-31 loss at Alfred. The setback dropped Fisher to 23rd in the rankings and knocked the Cardinals out of the AFCA poll.

With the win over Fisher, Alfred now has the inside track on the Empire 8 Conference regular season title, which would give the Saxons their second straight NCAA playoff berth. With a win Nov. 6 against visiting Ithaca, AU would clinch at least a share of the conference crown, and with tiebreakers would secure the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Saxons are in action next on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 12:30 p.m. at home against non-league foe Rochester.
