Sculpture students to demonstrate metal pour

Sculpture students from Alfred University’s School of Art & Design will demonstrate their mettle – and their metal – at the fourth annual Iron Pour and Metal Casting Convention to be held Saturday (Oct. 30) at The Foundry at the National Casting Center on Route 244 in Alfred.

Students will offer live demonstrations of different casting processes and techniques used to make sculpture between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Joining the AU students will be students and faculty from the West Wales School of Art; Salem Art Works; Buffalo State College; Binghamton University; Fraconia Sculpture Park; Skidmore College; Syracuse University; John Jay College; Union College; Mount Hood Community College; Rochester Institute of Technology, and others.

Visiting artist Tamsie Ringler, professor of sculpture at St. Katherine’s College, St. Paul, MN, will also participate.

The day’s schedule includes:
10 a.m. – noon: Steel induction pour
Noon – 8 p.m.: Cupola iron pours featuring “Tara,” a 500-pound-capacity molten iron furnace.

“All Star Cast,” a student exhibition of cast metal sculptures, will be on display in the lobby of the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery and in the Sculpture Garden, both at Harder Hall, through Monday, Nov. 1.
