Saxons to play Maritime College in first-round NCAA playoff game

ALFRED, NY -- Alfred University will host Maritime College in a first-round NCAA Division III football championship tournament game Saturday, Nov. 20.

The NCAA announced seedings and bracket pairings for the championships and Alfred (8-2, 5-0 Empire 8) is seeded sixth in the East Region and will take on third-seeded Maritime College at noon Saturday. Despite being the higher seed, Maritime is unable to host, so the game will be played at Alfred.

Maritime College is located in Throgs Neck, New York City, and is a member of the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. The Privateers (10-0) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Alfred, making its second straight appearance in the championships, earned the Empire 8 Conference's automatic NCAA berth.

Alfred was seeded third in the East last season and lost at home to Albright in a first-round game.

Mount Union is the top-seeded team in the East Region and will host eight-seeded St. Lawrence in a first-round game Saturday. Other East Region pairings include second-seeded Cortland at home against seventh-seeded Endicott, and fourth-seeded Delaware Valley hosting fifth-seeded Salisbury. Kickoff for all games is at noon.

If Alfred defeats Maritime, the Saxons would play the winner of the Cortland-Endicott game on Saturday, Nov. 27. If Alfred and Endicott each win, Alfred would host the second-round matchup.
