Saxons win; advance to Eastern Tournament championship game

ST. DAVIDS, PA—The Alfred University men’s basketball team defeated New Jersey City College, 64-60, in the first round of the Eastern University Tournament, Friday night.

The Saxons held a 37-34 advantage going into intermission shooting an impressive 62 percent, while holding New Jersey City to 28 percent from the floor.

With the win the Saxons advance to the championship game, playing host Eastern at 3 p.m. Saturday. Eastern beat Philadelphia Biblical University in Friday's other first-round game.

AU (1-1) was led by senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville), who scored a game-high 25 points. Sophomore guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) netted 13 points and picked up five rebounds. Junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) scored 12 points, and had four rebounds and two assists.

Da'Shon Barrino paced New Jersey City (0-1) scoring a team-high 15 points, while picking up three rebounds, and three assists. Dashawn Eagle scored 12 points and had seven rebounds; Taquan Abdullah scored 10 points.
