Saxons fall to host Eastern University in championship game

ST. DAVIDS, PA-- The Alfred University men’s basketball team was defeated by host Eastern College, 76-68 in overtime Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Eastern Tournament.

After a pair of key free throws from junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet) with six seconds left in regulation, Alfred sent Eastern to the line, where Collin Whipple converted on one of two free throws to tie the game and sent it into overtime.

In overtime Eastern scored the first 11 points to take a 76-65 lead. AU sophomore forward Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) hit a late three-pointer for the Saxons” only points in overtime.

Curran paced the Saxons netting a team-high 21 points, while picking up eight rebounds. Senior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) (nine assists) and junior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) each scored 16 points. Parker scored eight points, adding seven rebounds, and two assists.

Alex Nelson scored a game-high 33 points and had eight rebounds to lead Eastern. Whipple had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists; and Chaz Merriman-Brown scored 11 points and had six rebounds.

Kwiecien was named to the all-tournament team for AU (1-2). Alfred is in action next on Monday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m. when the Saxons travel to take on Penn College.
