AU English equestrian team fares well at Lehman Farms

PITTSFORD, NY — The Alfred University English equestrian team competed in a pair of weekend shows Nov. 20-21 at Lehman Farms, hosted by Nazareth College. The Saxons placed second of 10 teams on Saturday and fourth of 10 teams on Sunday.

Three AU riders took first-place ribbons in the Saturday show: freshman Megan Burke (Montrose, NY/Hendrick Hudson) in novice equitation over fences; junior Erika Raye (Sussex, NJ/High Point Regional) in novice equitation on the flat; and junior Danielle Ross (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s), also in novice equitation on the flat. Ross also placed third in intermediate equitation over fences.

Other top riders for AU Saturday included: senior Maire Cosgrove (White Haven, PA/Bishop Hoban), second in intermediate equitation over fences and third in open equitation on the flat; senior Michelle Flannery (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) and sophomore Amelia Keyes (Webster, NY), third in novice equitation over fences; senior Barbara Koziol (Syracuse, PA/Bishop Ludden), second in open equitation on the flat and third in open equitation over fences; junior Katie LeSuer (Edinboro, PA/Cambridge Springs), third in novice equitation on the flat; junior Jessica Repanes (Huntington Station, NY/Half Hollow Hills), second in advanced walk-trot-canter; junior Kelly Rinebold (Ontario, NY/Wayne), second in intermediate equitation on the flat and third in open equitation over fences; and senior Erin Toone (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), second in advanced walk-trot-canter.

Flannery was Reserve High Point rider for Sunday’s show after taking first-place ribbons in novice equitation over fences and intermediate equitation on the flat. Other event winners were: Cosgrove in open equitation on the flat; Koziol in open equitation over fences; and junior Kalcy O’Keefe (Rochester, NY/Penfield) in open equitation over fences. Koziol also placed second open equitation on the flat.

Other top riders for AU on Sunday included: Burke, second in novice equitation over fences; senior Johanna Moore (Summit, NY/Morristown-Beard), third intermediate equitation over fences; Ross, second in intermediate equitation on the flat; freshman Kaylyn Slater (Phelps, NY/Midlakes), second in advanced walk-trot-canter; and freshman Christina Watts (Barryville, NY/Eldred), second in walk-trot.

Three Saxon riders qualified to compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone II, Region II championships April 2 in Ithaca: Cosgrove in intermediate equitation over fences; Rinebold in intermediate equitation on the flat; and Ross in Novice equitation on the flat. After last weekend’s show, Alfred is second in the regional team rankings, behind Cornell.

The AU English equestrian team is in action next on Dec. 5 at Cornell.
