AU men’s basketball team evens record with win over SUNY Canton
The Saxons jumped out to a 30-9 lead midway through the opening half, courtesy of some hot early shooting. AU made 42 percent of its shots in the first half, including 48 percent (seven of 15) from three-point range. Meanwhile, Alfred held the visiting Kangaroos (1-4) to 32-percent shooting and held a 38-21 lead at intermission.
Canton closed to within nine points (50-41) with 9:36 left, but AU went on an 18-7 run over the ensuing seven minutes to pull away. The Saxons finished the game shooting 43 percent from the field, including 36 percent (10 of 28) from behind the arc, and forced 21 turnovers. Canton was hurt by poor foul shooting, making only 29 percent (six of 21) of its free throws.
Senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) led AU with a game-high 17 points to go with six rebounds. Junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) had 14 points and six boards and senior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) had 13 points and four rebounds. Parker shot six-of-eight from the floor and Kwiecien made three of four three-pointers. Junior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had six points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
Tony Valentin led Canton with 15 points and Silvon John added 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at home against Cazenovia.
