Lady Saxons fall to Fisher in conference opener

PITTSFORD, NY — The Alfred University women’s basketball team was defeated by host St. John Fisher, 71-61, Saturday afternoon in the Saxons' Empire 8 Conference opener.

AU went on an 8-0 run late in the first half, trimming Fisher’s lead to four with 5:30 left before intermission, before Fisher responded to take a 38-31 halftime lead.

For the game, AU was held to 32 percent shooting, while St. John Fisher shot 38 percent from the floor.

AU junior guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) netted a team-high 15 points while adding seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior guard Kacey Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) scored 11 points, adding a pair of assists; senior guard Lynsday Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) netted seven points, six boards, and three assists; and freshman forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) scored five points, while picking up a game-high 11 rebounds.

Colleen Maloney scored a game-high 27 points, adding three assists, to pace the Fisher attack. Camaryan Buckner and Bonny Gardner each scored 10 points, while picking up nine and seven boards, respectively.

Alfred is in action next on Jan. 2 at 2 p.m. at home against Penn State-Behrend.
