Lady Saxons edged by Utica, 66-56

UTICA, NY—The Alfred University women’s basketball team was defeated by host Utica College, 66-56, Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference game.

The teams played a tight first half, with AU (4-7, 0-3 Empire 8) holding a 31-28 advantage at the half. The Saxons shot 34 percent in the first half and made eight three-point shots, while Utica shot 42 percent from the floor.

The Pioneers went on a second half 13-0 run to take a 56-46 lead with 5:15 left in the game. AU responded with an 8-0 run making the score 58-54, but the Saxons could get no closer.
For the game, AU shot 37 percent from the floor, while finished shooting 45 percent.

Junior guard Christina Jordan (Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY/Cornwall) scored 20 points and had five assists and two rebounds to lead AU. Senior guard Courtney Lincoln (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) netted 14 points, four assists and three rebounds, and senior forward Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida) picked up a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) netted her 1000 point for her collegiate career scoring 9 nine points, adding four assists and three boards.

Meghan Fiore scored a game-high 27 points, adding eight rebounds to pace the Pioneers. Jessica Berry recorded a double-double scoring 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Devon Croll picked up a game-high 11 assists.

Alfred is in action next on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. vs. Elmira College.
