AU swimming and diving teams sweep Utica, Cazenovia

UTICA, NY – The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Utica College and Cazenovia in a tri-meet hosted by Utica Friday afternoon.

The AU men’s team defeated Utica 138.5 to 74.5 and Cazenovia 138.5-15 to improve to 4-1 (2-1 Empire 8); the Saxon women’s team took their meet with Utica, 137-77, and knocked off Cazenovia, 137-19, to move to 2-4 (1-2 Empire 8).

Sophomore Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and senior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) each won two events to lead the AU women’s team. Matich won the 50-yard free (28.02 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (1:09.76) and Blair took the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.86) and 500-yard freestyle (5:52.71).

Other winners for the Alfred women were sophomore Eda Pellumbi (Windham, ME/Cheverus) in the 1,000-yard free (12:09.89); senior Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia) in the 200-yard free (2:10.70); and freshman Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.74).

The team of junior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), sophomore Katie Ganley (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), Matich and freshman Rachel Garramone (Evanston, IL/Chicago Waldorf) won the 200-yard medley relay (2:04.46), while Remchuk, Garramone, Ganley and Blair took the 200 free relay (1:48.98).

Junior Jeff Swartout (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) won the 200-yard IM (2:08.78) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.11) to pace the AU men’s team.

Other winners for the Saxons were: sophomore Tyler Puls (Rochester, NY/Harley School) in the 1,000-yard free (11:38.67), sophomore Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in the 200 free (1:52.63), freshman Peter Sowinski (Akron, OH/Akron) in the 100-yard butterfly (57.96 seconds), senior Ted Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth) in the 100-yard backstroke (59.96), and senior Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) in the 500-yard free (5:00.36).

The team of junior Richard Guarniero (New York Mills, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), senior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris), sophomore Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) won the 200 medley relay (1:42.87), while Olsen, Chapman, senior Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) and Mix won the 200 free relay (1:32.29).

The AU men’s and women’s teams are in action next on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. for an Empire 8 dual-meet at Hartwick.
