Hartwick tops Saxons, 76-60

ONEONTA, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team lost to host Hartwick College, 76-60, Friday evening.

Hot shooting (48 percent from the floor) helped the Hawks build a 37-26 advantage heading into intermission. AU would get no closer than 11, as Hartwick’s impressive shooting carried over into the second half shooting 55 percent. For the game AU finished shooting 35 percent, and Hartwick shot 52 percent.

Senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Saxons (7-6, 2-3 Empire 8). Sophomore guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, NY/Honesdale) netted 12 points, and senior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) scored seven points, while picking up seven boards.

Jared Suderley scored 20 points and had seven rebounds to pace the Hawks(7-5, 2-1 Empire 8). Mark Blazek netted 18 points adding four rebounds and four assists, and Andres Caripo chipped in 17 points, four assists, and four boards.

Alfred plays next on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m. at Stevens.
