Hartwick sweeps Saxons

ALFRED, NY – Visiting Hartwick College defeated Alfred University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in and Empire 8 dual meet Saturday afternoon. Hartwick’s men’s team won, 139-95, while the Hawks’ women’s team won 156-78.

Senior Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) won two events for the AU men (4-2, 2-2 Empire 8): the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.83) and the 100-yard free (47.52). Other event winners for the Saxons were freshman Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) in the 50-yard free (22.43); senior Zach Mix (Mount Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.15); and senior Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.79).

The team of Sowinski, sophomore Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), senior Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) and Olsen won the 400-yard free relay for AU (3:17.78).

Senior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) won the 50-yard freestyle (25.14) and took second in the 100-yard free (56.36) to pace the AU women (2-5, 1-3 Empire).

Freshmen Paige Citarella (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell), sophomore Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Blair took second in the 400 medley relay (4:23.95) and freshman Rachel Garramone (Evanston, IL/Chicago Waldorf), sophomore Shelby Remington (Pike, NY/Letchworth), junior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) and senior Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia) were second in the 400 free relay (4:06.40).

The AU men and women are in action next on Saturday, Jan. 22, at noon at the Brockport.
