Saxons fall to Wells, 80-53

AURORA, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team lost to host Wells College, 80-53, Thursday evening.

Alfred (7-8, 2-4 Empire 8) trailed Wells the entire game, shooting 36 percent from the floor while being outrebounded 42-26.

Senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored a team-high 19 points to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career. Stopera entered the contest having scored 998 points in his career. Freshman guard Michael Hill (Whitesboro, NY/Norte Dame) netted 10 points, and sophomore center Bryan Bobo (Ontario, NY/Wayne) scored seven points, while pulling down seven boards. Senior point guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) chipped in five points.

Wells shot 56 percent from the floor. Terry Harrison scored a game-high 23 points and had five boards and four assists to lead the Express (7-9). Mabior Mayen had a double-double, netting 17 points and pulling down a game-high 11 boards, and Benito Perez chipped in 11 points.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. at Nazareth.
