AU swimming and diving teams sweep SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY-- The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each swept host SUNY Brockport Saturday afternoon. The AU men won, 136-99, and the Alfred women won, 136-98.

Senior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and sophomore Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) each won two events to pace the Alfred women (3-5). Blair won the 50-yard freestyle (25.51) and 100-yard free (56.51) and Matich won the 400-yard individual medley (5:09.31) and 100-yard butterfly (1:06.68).

Other event winner for the AU women were: senior Calista Merritt (Conesus, NY/Livonia) in the 1,000-yard free (11:39.69); junior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.71); and freshman Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.71).

The team of Hoops, Remchuk, Matich and Blair won the 400-yard medley relay in 4:26.33.

The AU men (5-2) won every individual non-diving event: sophomore Brett Irwin (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) took the 1,000-yard free (10:58.01); sophomore Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) won the 200-yard free (1:50.33); freshman Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) won the 50-yard freestyle (22.72); junior Jeff Swartout (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) took the 400-yard IM (4:34.43); senior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) won the 100-yard fly (54.51); senior Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) won the 100-yard free (50.31); junior Rich Guarniero (New York Mills, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) won the 100-yard back (57.23); senior Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) won the 500-yard free (4:52.29); and junior Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick) won the 100-yard breaststroke) 1:01.96).

Freshman Kyle Kraeger (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta), Dolben, Mix and Olsen won the 400-yard medley relay (3:43.64), and junior Rich Lenihan (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), Lobban, junior Vince Pascarella (Bradford, PA/Bradford) and freshman Yair Lazar (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) won the 200-yard free relay (1:37.38).

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. at home against Ithaca.
