Saxon men second, women third at Cornell-hosted ski races

FABIUS, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams competed Saturday and Sunday in races hosted by Cornell. The AU men placed second of 12 teams competing and the Alfred women were third of 12.

Saturday’s slalom races were held at Toggenburg Mountain in Fabius, NY. The AU men took third in the slalom races, with freshman Mike Stasko (Batavia, NY/National Sports Academy) pacing the Saxons with his seventh-place finish. Junior Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was ninth and junior Ryan Nanni (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 16th.

The AU men took second in Sunday’s giant slalom races, held at Greek Peak in Cortland, NY. Stasko took fourth in the GS to finish fourth in the combined standings.

The Alfred women placed fourth in Saturday’s slalom. Freshman Rebecca Spitz (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) was the Saxons’ top skier in the slalom, taking eighth. Senior Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 14th and sophomore Claire Dvorak (Tully, NY/Tully) was 21st.

The Alfred women were third in Sunday’s giant slalom. Caggianelli was fifth in the GS and finished the weekend fourth in the combined individual standings.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 29 and 30, at the AU Invitational at Swain.
