Nazareth defeats AU, 77-64, in Empire 8 women’s basketball action

PITTSFORD, NY — Host Nazareth College defeated the Alfred University women’s basketball team, 77-64, in an Empire 8 Conference contest Tuesday evening.

Nazareth led at the half, 41-34, and led by as many as 17 after intermission. AU closed to within seven (57-50) with just over six minutes remaining before Nazareth went on a 15-6 run to pull away late.

Neither team shot well, with Nazareth making 35 percent of its shots and Alfred 34 percent. Nazareth (8-9, 4-4 Empire 8) went 28-for-38 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Saxons, 48-38.

Senior guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) paced Alfred (7-9, 2-5 Empire 8) with 21 points and six rebounds. Freshman forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) had 15 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals and senior forward Lauren Sanford (Hornell, NY/Hornell) added 13 points and four boards. Senior point guard Courtney Lincoln (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) dished out a team-best four assists.

Katie Kollar scored a game-high 22 points to go with seven rebounds and four blocked shots to pace Nazareth. Brittany Wilson had 16 points and seven rebounds and Brittany TallChief had eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Alfred is in action next on Friday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m. at home against RIT.
