Nazareth tops Saxons, 73-59

PITTSFORD, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team was defeated by Nazareth, 72-62, Tuesday night in an Empire 8 Conference game.

Alfred (7-9, 2-5 Empire 8) trailed Nazareth, 44-28, at the end of the first half. The Saxons came out came out strong in the second half outscoring The Golden Flyers 31-29, but were unable to get closer than nine. For the game, AU shot 37 percent and Nazareth (11-6, 4-4 Empire 8) shot 52 percent.

Senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and sophomore center Bryan Bobo (Ontario, NY/Wayne) (six boards) each scored 13 points, while picking up five and three assists respectively to pace the Saxons. Senior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) scored 12 points and a pair of rebounds and junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) chipped in 10 points.

Jason Corletta and Phil Scaffidi each scored a game-high 22 points to lead Nazareth. Tyshun Stephens netted 12 points and Brad ford scored seven points and had a game-high seven rebounds.

Alfred is in action next on Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. vs. RIT.
