Saxons drop 80-66 decision to RIT

ALFRED, NY — Visiting RIT defeated the Alfred University men’s basketball team, 80-66, Friday evening at the McLane Center.

RIT (8-9, 5-3 Empire 8) made 12 three-pointers and outrebounded Alfred 37-29. The Saxons (7-10, 2-6 Empire 8) led 37-35 at the half. The Tigers came out strong in the second halfm outscoring AU 45-29, and shooting an impressive 64 percent from the floor to the Saxons 37 percent. For the game, RIT shot 53 percent to AU’s 47.

Senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored 17 points and senior point guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) scored 11 points and had four assists to lead the Saxons. Freshman forward Michael Branche (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central) scored a career-high 10 points and had five boards, and junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) and junior forward Patrick Hollenbeck (Ontario, NY/Wayne) each scored eight points. Junior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored six points and pulled down a game-high 11 boards.

Justin Heisig scored a game-high 24 point and had nine boards to pace the Tigers. Anthony Terry scored 20 points and had a game-high six assists, and Gabe Nicasio netted 14 points.

Alfred is in action next on Tuesday, Feb. 1 vs. St. John Fisher.
