Alfred University hosts Alpine ski races

SWAIN, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams hosted two days of races Saturday and Sunday at Swain Ski Center. Both AU teams placed fifth out of 11 teams competing in the weekend races.

On Saturday, the AU men took third in the giant slalom. Freshman Mike Stasko (Batavia, NY/National Sports Academy) was the Saxons’ top skier, taking sixth. Junior Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was 13th and junior V.J. Brick (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 20th. In Sunday’s slalom races, the Alfred men were fifth. Barton was sixth, Stasko was ninth, and junior Ryan Nanni (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 23rd.

The Alfred women placed third in Saturday’s giant slalom. Senior Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 13th, freshman Rebecca Spitz (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) was 16th, and sophomore Claire Dvorak (Tully, NY/Tully) was 18th. The Saxon women were fifth in the slalom races. Caggianelli led Alfred with a 13th-place finish; Spitz and Dvorak were 16th and 18th, respectively.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 5 and 6, at Toggenburg Mountain in Fabius, NY.
