Stevens defeats Saxons, 80-56

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team was defeated by Stevens, 80-56, Friday evening at the McLane Center.

Stevens (14-5, 7-3 Empire 8) shot 55 percent from the floor to 37 percent for Alfred and forced 13 AU turnovers. The visitors held a 40-36 lead at the half and allowed the Saxons to close within three points, at 43-40, with 18:16 left in the game. For the game, the Ducks held a 46-26 advantage in rebounds.

Senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored a team-best 10 points and had three rebounds to lead the Saxons. Junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) scored 10 points off the bench and senior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) netted nine points. Sophomore guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) five points, three boards and three steals.

Simon Smith tallied a double-double for Stevens, scoring a game-high 24 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Mike Cutri scored 13 points and had six boards, and Sheldon Jones netted 13 points. Patrick Sabatino chipped in with 10 points.

Alfred (7-11, 2-7 Empire 8) is in action next on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 4 p.m. at home vs. Hartwick.
