Hartwick defeats AU in Empire 8 women’s basketball contest

ALFRED, NY — Hartwick College defeated the host Alfred University women’s basketball team, 61-42, Saturday afternoon at the McLane Center.

Both teams shot poorly from the field — Hartwick shot 34 perent and Alfred 33 percent — but the Hawks (6-11, 3-6 Empire 8) made 24 of 30 free throws (80 percent) and forced 28 AU turnovers. Hartwick led 32-26 at the half and held the Saxons (8-11, 3-7 E8) to only 16 points after intermission.

Senior guard Courtney Lincoln (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) led AU with nine points, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Freshman forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds and senior guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) (four assists, four rebounds, three steals) and junior guard Kacey Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) each netted seven points.

Kate Purcell had 14 points and Maria Fogell had 12 to pace Hartwick. Katrina Caulfield chipped in with seven points and nine rebounds.

AU is in action next on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. at Elmira.
