Saxon ski teams qualify for regionals

FABIUS, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams competed Saturday and Sunday at Toggenburg Mountain. The AU men took fifth place and the Alfred women fourth of 11 teams competing.

Both the Alfred men’s and women’s teams qualified to compete in the United States Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA) Mideast Regional championships Feb. 18-20 at West Mountain in Glens Falls.

The AU men took fifth in Saturday’s giant slalom. Freshman Mike Stasko (Batavia, NY/National Sports Academy) led the Saxons with an 18th-place finish. Junior Ryan Nanni (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 33rd and junior Steve Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was 46th.

In Sunday’s men’s slalom, Stasko placed ninth as the Saxons placed seventh. Barton was 12th and junior V.J. Brick (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 22nd.

The Alfred women were second as a team in the slalom Saturday. Freshman Rebecca Spitz (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) was the Saxons women’s team’s top skier in the GS, placing fourth. Senior Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was ninth and sophomore Claire Dvorak (Tully, NY/Tully) was 13th.

In Sunday’s GS, Dvorak was 33rd, freshman Dianne Mattar (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) was 35th and freshman Meagan Smith (Naples, NY/Naples) was 51st as AU placed fifth.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12 and 13, at Bristol Mountain.
