AU women’s basketball team defeats Elmira College

ELMIRA, NY — The Alfred University women’s basketball team rallied past host Elmira College for a 66-59 victory Tuesday evening.

AU (9-12, 4-8 Empire 8) trailed by a point at halftime, 24-23, after shooting 24 percent in the first 20 minutes. But the Saxons rebounded to shoot 47 percent after intermission and outscore the Soaring Eagles 43-35 in the second half. The Saxons outrebounded Elmira 50-37 and made 20 of 28 free throws to help neutralize eight three-pointers made by the hosts.

Senior guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) scored a game-high 27 points to lead AU. Murphy also had five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Senior guard Courtney Lincoln (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) had 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals and senior forward Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida) had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) added eight rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Becky Peterman (four three-pointers) had 16 points and five rebounds for Elmira (5-17, 2-11 Empire 8). Becca Fretz had 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks and Maria Thannhauser added 12 points.

Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. against visiting Utica.
