Saxons fall at Elmira
ELMIRA, NY — Host Elmira made 11 three-pointers en route to a 73-66 victory over Alfred University in Empire 8 Conference men’s basketball action Tuesday night.
Elmira (2-20, 1-12 Empire 8) led 31-22 at the half as the Soaring Eagles made five three-point shots and six of seven free throws. For the game, Elmira shot 46 percent from behind the arc, making 11 of 24 long-range shots, and made 47 percent of its shots overall. Alfred (8-13, 3-9 Empire 8) shot 49 percent from the floor, including 40 percent (six of 15) on three pointers.
Both teams made 14 of 20 free throws and Alfred held a slight 31-26 rebounding advantage.
Sophomore guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) led Alfred with 16 points — making four of six three-point shots and all four free throws — and a game-high seven rebounds. Junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) had 14 points and senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had 13 points and a game-high five assists. Junior forward Derek Lewis (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had eight points and seven boards.
Bobby DiPiazza scored a game-high 24 points and had seven rebounds for Elmira. Josh Keys and Derrick Vogel each netted 13 points.
Alfred is in action next on Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. at home against Utica.
