Utica rallies to defeat AU women’s basketball team

ALFRED, NY — Visiting Utica College erased a three-point halftime deficit and defeated the Alfred University women’s basketball team, 72-68, Friday night in the McLane Center.

Alfred (9-13, 4-9 Empire 8) led 34-31 at the half after shooting 41 percent from the floor while outrebounding Utica 27-14 and holding the visitors to 34 percent shooting. Utica (12-9, 8-4 Empire 8) shot 46 percent from the floor and made 20 of 26 free throws in the second half to outscore AU 41-34 after intermission.

Senior guard Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) scored 24 points and pulled down five rebounds to pace Alfred. Senior guard Courtney Lincoln (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) had 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals and freshman forward Grace Williamson (Olean, NY/Olean) had 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Senior forward Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida) chipped in with nine rebounds and a pair of assists.

Utica’s Jessica Berry scored a game-high 26 points and a game-best 12 rebounds while also adding three assists and four steals. Meghan Fiore had 20 points and six boards and Katie McGee scored 10.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at home against Ithaca.
