Utica tops Saxons in OT, 71-69

ALFRED, NY — The visiting Utica Pioneers defeated the Alfred University men’s basketball team, 69-71 in overtime, Friday evening at the McLane Center.

The teams were evenly matched heading into intermission tied at 28, and each team scoring 37 in the second half. The Pioneers outshot AU, shooting 49 percent to 39 percent.

Senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored a game-high 20 points and sophomore guard Sean Curran (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) netted 11 points and two steals to pace Alfred (10-12, 3-10 Empire 8). Junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) had 10 points, six boards, two steals and a block, and sophomore center Bryan Bobo (Ontario, NY/Wayne) finished with six points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Will Abrams scored 17 points and pulled down six boards to lead the Pioneers (7-14, 2-10 Empire 8). James Paterson (seven boards, five assists) and Jevin McClendon each netted 16 points.

Alfred plays next on Saturday, Feb.12, at 4 p.m. against visiting Ithaca College.
