Nazareth drops Saxons

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University men’s basketball team was defeated by visiting Nazareth, 86-54, in their season home finale Saturday afternoon.

The Saxons trailed Nazareth, 46-30, at intermission. Both teams shot 50 percent in the half (AU 52 percent and Nazareth 50).

AU (9-16, 3-12 Empire 8) was able to close the gap to 10 points (49-43) with 14:49 remaining, but got no closer as the Golden Flyers outscored the Saxons 40-24, in the second half. For the game, Alfred shot 42 percent and Nazareth (14-10, 7-8 Empire 8) shot 51 percent. Nazareth held a commanding 44-24 advantage in rebounds.

Senior guard Mike Stopera (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) scored a team-high 12 points with four assists and senior guard Gary Kwiecien (Perry, NY/Perry) netted 10 points to lead the Saxons. Sophomore center Bryan Bobo (Ontario, NY/Wayne) netted nine points and four rebounds, and junior guard Josh Parker (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) had six points, five boards and a pair of blocks.

Jason Corletta scored a game-high 22 points and
Phil Scaffidi had 21 points, eight boards, and a steal to pace the Golden Flyers. Brad Ford chipped in with 16 points and a game-best nine boards.

Alfred concludes their season Saturday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m. at RIT.
