AU ski teams end season at regionals

GLENS FALLS, NY – The Alfred University men’s and women’s Alpine ski teams competed at the United States Collegiate Ski Association (USCSA) Mideast Regional championships Saturday and Sunday at West Mountain in Glens Falls.

The AU men placed fifth and the Alfred women seventh of 11 teams competing at regionals. Both AU teams end their seasons, as only the top two teams advance to USCSA nationals next month in Idaho.

The Alfred men were sixth in Saturday’s giant slalom, with freshman Mike Stasko (Batavia, NY/National Sports Academy) placing a team-best fifth. Junior Stephen Barton (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was 19th; junior V.J. Brick (Batavia, NY/Batavia) was 32nd and Luke Masi (North Jersey, NJ/Jefferson Township) was 38th.

The AU women took ninth in the GS, with freshman Rebecca Spitz (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) taking 24th. Sophomore Claire Dvorak (Tully, NY/Tully) was 31st, and freshmen Dianne Mattar (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) and Meagan Smith (Naples, NY/Naples) were 34th and 46th, respectively.

The Saxon men took fifth as a team in Sunday’s slalom, with Stasko’s eight-place finish leading the way. Barton was 11th, Brick was 29th, and freshman Elliot Hockey (Caroga Lake, NY/Johnstown) was 32nd.

Dvorak placed a team-best 19th to lead the AU women in the slalom. Senior Megan Caggianelli (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 22nd, Smith was 39th and Mattar was 41st.
