AU swimming and diving teams complete first day of competition at state meet

WEBSTER, NY -- The Alfred University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened competition Wednesday at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championships.

The UNYSCSA championships, held at the Webster Aquatic Center near Rochester, are being held today through Saturday. After four events on the first day's action, the AU men are in fifth place with 155 points. Defending champ Stevens is in first with 342 points. The Alfred women are in 11th place after five events with 70 points; defending champion Ithaca leads with 438 points.

Senior Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) led the Alfred men Wednesday with a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21.36 seconds). Senior Matt Lobban (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) was fifth in the 500-yard free (4:44.35).

Other top performers for the Saxon men were: senior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris), 10th in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.20); freshman Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron), 11th in the 50 free (21.75); senior Dan Steere (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond), 17th in the 50 free (21.84); and sophomore Nate Chapman (Hornell, NY/Hornell), 20th in the 500 free (4:51.65).

The team of juniors Richard Guarniero (New York Mills, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) and Warren Dolben (Rye, NH/Berwick Academy), Mix and Sowinski took sixth in thw 200-yard medley relay (1:36.14).

Senior Sarah Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn) paced the AU women with her sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.43 seconds).

The team of junior Donna Hoops (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo), freshman Heather Remchuk (Hornell, NY/Hornell), sophomore Eryn Matich (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Blair were seventh in the 200 medley relay (1:52.47).

The championships continue Thursday with 10:30 a.m. preliminaries and 6:30 p.m. finals heats in the 200-yard free relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 1-meter diving, and the 400-yard medley relay.
