AU’s Murphy named Second Team Empire 8 Conference all-star
2/24/11

ALFRED, NY — Lyndsay Murphy (Almond, NY/Hornell) a senior guard on the Alfred University women’s basketball team, has been named a Second Team Empire 8 Conference all-star.

Murphy, who earned First Team Empire 8 honors the previous two seasons, averaged 15.8 points per game (fifth in the conference) to go with 3.2 assists per contest (eighth in the league). Her 2.56 three-point shots made per game led the Empire 8 and her .828 free throw percentage ranked second.

In three seasons as a Saxon, after transferring to AU from St. John Fisher, Murphy earned all-conference recognition three times and became the first player in Alfred women’s basketball history to earn First Team honors. She finished her AU career with 1,123 points, which is good for fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list. Her 250 assists rank fifth all-time and her 130 steals rank 11th. Murphy’s 396 points this year is tied for second in a single season at Alfred.

Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on teams sponsored by the conference, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibited outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of “competing with honor and integrity.” Alfred’s women’s basketball honoree is senior forward Autumn McLain (Oneida, NY/Oneida).

AU finished the season 10-15 overall and 5-11 in the Empire 8 (sixth in the final conference standings).
