Saxons drop Shenandoah in season opener

ALFRED, NY — Senior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) scored a career-high nine points (five goals, four assists) as the Saxons defeated host Shenandoah, 17-6, Saturday afternoon.

Alfred outshot the Hornets 59-22, and won 20 of 25 faceoffs. The Saxons held a commanding 11-2 lead at halftime, and out scored the hosts 6-4 in the second half.

Junior attack Stefen Dabkowski (Latham, NY/Shaker (SUNY Delhi CC)) netted four goals, and freshman attack Caleb McCraig (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst)) scored a goal and had three assists. Senior midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown) and sophomore midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) each scored a goal and an assist. Junior attack Aaron Ward (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and sophomore midfielder Jay Sterns (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst)) each scored two goals, and five other Saxons recorded at least a point. Freshman midfielder Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) finished a perfect 19-19 at the faceoff X and a game-high nine groundballs, and sophomore defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) finished with seven groundballs as the Saxons held a 44-26, advantage in groundballs.

Gregory Love netted three goals to pace the Hornets (0-2) and Sean Mack and Courtney Ledden each scored a goal and an assist.

Senior Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) played 45:59 in goal for the Saxons recording two saves while allowing three goals and sophomore Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) played the remaining 14:01 making four saves and giving up three goals. Shenandoah’s Andrew Fleischmann played the first half allowing 19 goals, while making 15 saves. Austin Clark played 13:49 and made four savings and gave up a goal, and Brett Homes played just over a minute allowing one goal.

AU (1-0, 0-0 Empire 8) plays next on March 5 against Brockport
