AU’s Olsen earns Empire 8 all-conference swimming honors

ALFRED, NY —Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga), a senior on the Alfred University men’s swimming and diving team, has been named an Empire 8 Conference all-star.

Olsen was named Second Team all-conference in the 100-yard freestyle, the conference announced this week. Conference all-stars are determined by the performance of Empire 8 swimmers and divers at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championships.

Olsen placed second overall and second among Empire 8 athletes in the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday’s final day of competition at the four-day UNYSCSA championships, held at Webster Aquatic Center outside Rochester. His time of 45.83 seconds met NCAA “B” cut qualifying standards. Olsen will learn this week if his time will be fast enough to earn him entry to the NCAA Division III championships, March 23-26 in Knoxville, TN.

Each season, the Empire 8 honors students-athletes from each conference school, who play on teams sponsored by the conference, with Sportsperson of the Year awards. Honorees, chosen by their coaches, exhibited outstanding sportsmanship in keeping with the conference’s mission of “competing with honor and integrity.” Senior Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) is Alfred’s honoree.
