AU softball team wins pair to open season
In the opener against Division II Bloomfield, freshman centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) hit an RBI single in the top the seventh, giving AU a 4-0 lead. Delgado drove in what proved to be the winning run, as Bloomfield plated three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Junior Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) got the complete-game pitching win for AU, allowing three unearned runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking a pair. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate, with a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI.
Junior third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) had two hits (including a triple) and scored a run, while senior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and junior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) (double) each had a hit and an RBI. Sophomore second baseman Kassandra Corsi (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby) had a hit, scored a run, and stole a base.
Sophomore catcher Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) belted a three-run homerun for the Saxons in the five-inning win against Carlow. Gross’s blast came during an eight-run second inning. Senior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out three and walking none.
Shepherd went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and two runs scored and Delgado had two hits (including a double), two RBIs and a run scored.
Freshman infielder Melissa Montano (West Covina, CA/Walnut) was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs; sophomore infielder Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, NY/Longwood) (double, two runs) and freshman outfielder Alexis Caruso (Coram, NY/Longwood) (RBI, run scored) each had a base hit; Hedrick was 2-for-3, scored a run and stole a base; and sophomore outfielder Laura Haas (Buffalo, NY/Immaculata) (two runs, one RBI) and freshman utility player Jacqueline Tomisman (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) each had a hit.
AU continues its 10-game Florida slate today (March 7) with a pair of games against Finlandia, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Saxons play Division II Concord at 11 a.m. Tuesday and are idle Wednesday before taking on Bloomfield (9 a.m.) and Concord (1 p.m.) on Thursday. AU plays Concord at 11 a.m. Friday then plays two games (11 a.m., 1 p.m.) on Saturday against Johnson State.
