AU softball team splits two with Finlandia
The Saxons (3-1) lost the first game, 10-3, then rebounded to shut out Finlandia, 7-0. Sophomore catcher Hana Gross (Union, NJ/Union) belted a home run in each game, giving her three homers and nine RBIs in Alfred’s first four games.
Senior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) tossed seven shutout innings in Alfred’s win in the second game, allowing seven hits and striking out two while walking none. Gross had two hits (two-run homerun, double) and drove in three, and freshman centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
Freshman infielder Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in and junior third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) had two hits.
AU junior Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) started the opener and allowed six runs on five hits while striking out one and walking one. Cary relieved and tossed five innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out six and walking two. Gross hit a three-run homer in three at-bats and Shepherd was 3-for-4 with a run scored and three stolen bases
Senior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) was 1-for-3 with a run scored; sophomore catcher Emily Fenton (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) stroked a double; and sophomore outfielder Laura Haas (Buffalo, NY/Immaculata) had a hit and walked once.
AU continues its 10-game Florida slate today (March 8) with an 11 a.m. game against Division II Concord. The Saxons are idle Wednesday before taking on Bloomfield (9 a.m.) and Concord (1 p.m.) on Thursday. AU plays Concord at 11 a.m. Friday then plays two games (11 a.m., 1 p.m.) on Saturday against Johnson (VT) State.
