AU men’s lacrosse team tops Misericordia

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team remained unbeaten on the season after a 19-13 defeat of Misericordia Wednesday afternoon in Myrtle Beach.

AU (3-0) led 6-1 after the first quarter, but led by only two goals at the half (9-7) after being outscored 6-3 in the second. In the third, the Saxons scored five goals to Misericordia’s two to take a comfortable 14-9 lead into the fourth.

Sophomore midfielder Jay Stearns (Corning, NY/Corning West) led AU with three goals and four assists. Senior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and freshman attack Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West) each had three goals and three assists and junior attack Stefan Dabkowski (Latham, NY/Shaker) had a game-high four goals.

Freshman midfielder Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) had two goals for the Saxons, who outshot Misericordia, 43-34, and held a slight 27-26 advantage in groundballs. Sophomore midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home), senior midfielder Justin Kieffer (Middletown, MD/Middletown), junior midfielder Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) and freshman midfielder Matt Hauser (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) each netted a goal for AU, while sophomore midfielder Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South) added an assist.

Lee Blair had three goals and a pair of assists and Zach Buckley added three goals to pace Misericordia (1-1), which held a 19-16 advantage in face-offs.

Senior Adam Schutz (Geneva, NY/Geneva) started in goal for AU and allowed nine goals while making five saves in 37 minutes. Sophomore Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) played 22 minutes, allowed three goals and made six saves, and junior John Landi (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) played the final minute and allowed a goal.

Senior defenseman Alex Hamilton (Corning, NY/Corning East) had three groundballs and forced four turnovers to lead the AU defense. Freshman long-stick midfielder Pat Walsh (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) had four groundballs.

Ryan Kay started in goal for Misericordia and made nine saves while allowing 14 goals in 47 minutes of play. Matt Garnjost played the final 13 minutes, made no saves and allowed five goals.

AU plays SUNY Potsdam at noon Friday, March 11, in Myrtle Beach. The Saxons then return to Alfred to prepare for a visit from non-conference foe Morrisville (March 16). Alfred plays non-conference road games at Medaille (March 19) and Thiel (March 26) before opening its Empire 8 Conference slate March 30 against visiting Nazareth.
