AU offers week-long summer Pre-Chemistry Camp for teen-agers

Alfred University will be offering a week-long Consumer Chemistry Camp, Sunday, July 10-Thursday, July 14, 2011, designed for students ages 14-17 who have completed eighth-grade math and science.

Applications are being accepted now through Friday, April, 15, 2011. Cost of the program, including room and board, is $850.

This program is an opportunity for students to learn more about chemistry, to sample life on a college campus. and to meet other students with similar interests and academic ability.

Participating students will learn to interpret the ingredients of foods and products while learning some basic chemistry. The camp will also include discussions, brief lectures, reading about chemistry in the news, and inquiry-based activities. Campers will also develop a deeper understanding of household products in a fun and safe environment through the laboratory component.

A topic selected later in the week will be driven by students’ interests and the camp will culminate in student-led presentations of everyday chemistry.

Ruth Bowers, AU assistant professor of chemistry, is the camp director. She earned a master of education degree in science (chemistry) education from Penn State University and a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Purdue University.
