AU women’s lacrosse falls to Keuka in season opener

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team was defeated by Keuka, 13-11, Wednesday evening.

Sophomore midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) got Alfred on the board first scoring an unassisted goal just 36 seconds into the game. Keuka responded with eight unanswered goals to take an 8-1 lead with 8:23 left in the first half. The Saxons rallied scoring four unanswered goals to make it 8-5 at the half.

AU came out strong in the second half scoring the first four goals of the half to take a 9-8 lead with 23:17 left in the game. The Storm would regain the lead following four straight goals making it a 12-9 game with 3:20 left to play. The Saxons scored on a free position shot with 1:32 left, but could get no closer as each team traded a goal to close out the scoring.

Senior midfielder Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) led Alfred (0-1, 0-0 Empire) with three goals and one assist. Freshman midfielder Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) netted two goals and had an assist, and senior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY /Horseheads) scored one goal and had two assists. Sophomore attack Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial) and fitzgerald each scored a goal and an assist, and sophomore midfielder Tracie McGinnity (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili), freshman defender Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and junior attack Ivy Lam (Sanford, ME/Sanford) each scored a goal.

Brandy Shafer scored three goals and two assists and Taylor Smith netted three goals to pace Keuka (0-1).

Junior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) went the distance in goal for Alfred, making nine saves. Keuka’s Molly Hogan also went the distance and had fours saves and allowed 11 goals.

Alfred plays next on Sunday, March 20, at 1 p.m. against Marywood
