Saxons defeat Medaille 21-6

ALFRED, NY- Senior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) netted five goals and dished out four assists to lead the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team to a 21-6 victory over visiting Medaille College Saturday afternoon.

The teams played a tight first half with the Saxons holding a 6-5 advantage at the half. AU (6-0, 0-0 Empire 8) came out hot in the second half scoring ten unanswered goals including three from Zoyhofski, to build a 16-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Saxons tallied four more goals, before Medaille’s Brock Levick scored the Mavericks lone goal of the second half with 3:01 left to play. Levick’s goal ended a thirty-minute scoring drought for the visitors.

For the game, the Saxons dominated on faceoffs winning 20 of 28 draws, as freshman midfielder Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) (10 groundballs) finished 17 of 23.

Junior attack Stefan Dabkowski (Latham, NY/Shaker (SUNY Delhi) scored five goals and two assists, and freshman attack Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst)) netted a goal and had a game-high five assists. Sophomore midfielder Jay Sterns (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst) scored a goal and two assists, and junior midfielder Justin Shultis (Kingston, NY/Kingston (SUNY Dehli) (one assist), sophomore midfielder Matt Hodnick (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton), and Lambert each scored two goals. Junior midfielder Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy), junior attack Aaron Ward (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), and sophomore midfielder Matt Zon (Tonawanda, NY/ Sweet Home) each scored goal. Sophomore midfielder Eric Jelen (Nanuet, NY/Clarkstown South), and junior midfielder Brendan Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) finished with two and one assists respectively.

Sophomore Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) played the first 45:00 in net for the Saxons making eight saves. Senior Adam Schutz Geneva, NY/Geneva) played 10:05 in goal making one save, and junior John Landi (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) played the remainder of the game and had one save.

Joe Kozovski and Jim Luthart each scored two goals, and Brian Roff made eight saves in goal to lead the Mavericks.

Alfred returns to action March 26 at 1 p.m., when they take on host Thiel.
