Saxons defeat host Thiel to improve to 7-0

GREENVILLE, PA- The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team defeat host Thiel College 21-3, Saturday afternoon to improve to 7-0, AU’s best start since 1997.

The Saxons scored the game's first 15 goals before the Tomcats (1-7) scored back-to-back goals, making it a 15-2 game with 4:24 left in the third quarter. AU tallied six more goals before Thiel’s Andrew Shaver found the back of the net with 1:43 remaining to close out the scoring.

Senior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) scored a game-best six points (four goals, two assists) and freshman attack Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst)) netted two goals and dished out three assists to lead AU. Freshman midfielder Derek Green (Pittsburgh, PA/The Kiski School) and freshman attack Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) each finished with three points on two goals and an assist.

Sophomore Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) played the first half in net for the Saxons, making two saves, and junior John Landi (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) played the second half of the game, stopping five shots.

Shaver scored two goals and Francis Ahia had a goal to pace the Tomcats. Alex Cornwell started in net for Thiel, making 13 saves. Richard Cannon played the final 22:45 and had five saves.

Alfred (7-0, 0-0 Empire 8) returns to action March 30 at 4 p.m., when they take on visiting Nazareth College in Empire 8 Conference play.
