Allegheny tops AU women’s lacrosse team, 19-16
ALFRED, NY – Visiting Allegheny College erased a three-goal halftime deficit, scoring eight of the first nine goals after intermission en route to a 19-16 victory over the host Alfred University women’s lacrosse team Tuesday afternoon at Merrill Field.
After trailing 13-10 at the half, Allegheny (7-3) took a 15-13 lead on a Brennan Maine goal with 24:21 left in regulation. Freshman midfielder Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) scored with 21 minutes left to draw AU (0-3) to within a goal, at 15-14, but the visitors tallied three unanswered scores over a five-minute period to take an 18-14 lead with just under 10 minutes left.
The loss spoiled a career day for White, who finished with seven goals and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Devin Fitzgerald (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and senior attack Michelle Adams (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) each added three goals and an assist for the host Saxons.
Allegheny outshot Alfred, 38-24 and held a slight 23-19 advantage on groundballs.
Jensen Patterson had seven goals and an assist to pace Allegheny. Kiah Voyer-Colbath had five goals and an assist and Maine netted four goals.
Senior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made 10 saves in goal for Alfred, while Allegheny netminder Becca O’Shurak made three saves.
Alfred is in action next on Friday, April 1, at 4 p.m., when the Saxons open their Empire 8 Conference schedule against visiting Hartwick.
