Nazareth tops AU, 13-9

ALFRED, NY- Visiting Nazareth College defeated the Alfred University men’s lacrosse team, scoring 10 unanswered goals in the second half, en route to a 13-9, victory Wednesday afternoon at Merrill Field.

AU jumped out to a 3-0 lead, holding the visitors scoreless in the first quarter of play. Sophomore midfielder Jay Sterns (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst) scored the Saxons’ fourth goal with 10:48 left in the second quarter to increase AU’s lead to 4-0. Nazareth tallied a pair of goals to trim the lead to 4-2 with 5:48 left in the first half. Alfred regained a two goal lead following and a pair of unassisted goals in the final two minutes of the first half, to head into halftime with a 6-2 lead.

The Golden Flyers scored first in the second half when Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar scored a man-up goal of an assist from C.J. Estes just 27 seconds into the third quarter. AU responded less than a minute later when sophomore midfielder Jay Sterns (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst) scored an extra-man goal from junior attack Aaron Ward (Hamburg, NY/Frontier). The Saxons found the net again with 9:10 left in the third quarter when sophomore defender Jake Spadoni (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) took it coast to coast giving the Saxons’ a five goal lead (8-3), their largest of the contest. The Golden Flyers scored five unanswered goals to tie the game 8-8 with 2:40 left in the third quarter.

Nazareth’s momentum from the third quarter carried over into the fourth as they tacked on five more unanswered goals, before Junior attack Stefan Dabkowski (Latham, NY/Shaker (SUNY Delhi) scored for Alfred with 4:32 left in the game. Dabkowski’s goal snapped over a 20 minute scoring drought for AU.

For the Game, Nazareth held advantages in shots (49-32), and groundballs (38-26).

Dabkowski finished with two goals and an assist, and Stearns finished with a pair of goals to lead AU (7-1, 0-1 Empire 8). Senior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and sophomore midfielder Matt Hodnik (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) each had a goal and an assist. Freshman midfielder Derek Green (Pittsburgh, PA/The Kiski School) and freshman attack Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West (Mercyhurst)) and each added a goal. Freshman midfielder Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) finished 11 of 22 on face-offs, and scooped up a game-high eight groundballs.

Sophomore Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) played the first 54:47 in net for the Saxons making a career-high 14 saves. Senior Adam Schutz Geneva, NY/Geneva) played the final 5:13 in net and made one save.

Nate Delone and Scott Castle (one assist) each scored three goals, and Estes finished with a goal and two assists to pace Nazareth (6-3, 1-0 Empire 8). Grant Williams played 43:40 in net for the Golden Flyers making twos, and allowing eight goals. Tim Doyle played 16:20 in goal and made two saves, while allowing only one goal.

Alfred returns to action Saturday, April 2 at 4 p.m., when they take on visiting Stevens in Empire 8 Conference play.
