AU outdoor track and field teams open with strong showing at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, PA — The Alfred University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams opened their 2011 seasons Saturday (April 2) at the Muhlenberg College Invitational. There were no team scores, but several Saxon athletes turned in solid performances.

Senior Shawn Ross (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) paced the AU men’s team with a pair of top-five finishes, including a win in the shot put (14.39 meters). He was also fifth in the discus with a toss of 39.21 meters.

Other top performers for the AU men were: sophomore Chris Lopez (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), third in both the long jump (6.56 meters) and 100-meter dash (11.54 seconds); junior Evan Roush (Newport, PA/Newport) and senior Austin Fox (Reinholds, PA/Lancaster Catholic), second (13.48 meters) and third (13.33 meters), respectively, in the triple jump; and junior Richard Scott (Eden, NY/Eden), third in the 200-meter dash (22.83 seconds).

Lopez, sophomore Jeremy Weaver (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster Catholic), Fox and Scott were fourth in the 4X100-meter relay (45.60 seconds).

Freshmen Rebecca Graudons (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) and Eliza Parker (Oswego, NY/Oswego) led the Alfred women. Graudons turned in a second-place finish in the pole vault (3.20 meters), and was fourth in the high jump (1.53 meters); Parker was third in the 100-meter hurdles (16.81 seconds) and second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.91).

Other top performers for the AU women were: sophomore Jordyn Larkins (Rochester, NY/Harley-Allendale-Columbia), fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.34 seconds); sophomore Kelly-Jo Beck (York, NY/York), fourth in the discus (30.81 meters); Kelly McNamara, fourth in the shot put (9.85 meters) and sixth in the discus (30.68 meters); freshman Corine Pettit (Strykersville, NY/Holland), seventh in the long jump (4.65 meters) and third in the triple jump (10.26 meters); freshman Liz De Monte (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman), third in the high jump (1.53 meters); and sophomore Amy Morrissey (Hornell, NY/Hornell), sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.72).

The team of Larkins, Parker, freshman Armoni Jeffries (Rochester, NY/School of the Arts) and sophomore Jennifer Miranda (Bronx, NY/Academy of Letters) was second in the 4X100-meter relay (53.90 seconds), and the 4X400-meter relay team of Parker, Morrissey, Pettit and freshman Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) was fourth in 4:20.47.

The AU men and women are in action next on Saturday, April 9, at Mount Union.
