Alumna’s dance company to perform at Geva Theatre, Rochester
4/07/11

Performances by FuturPointe Dance will be featured at Geva Theatre Center’s Nextstage on Saturday, April 9, and Friday and Saturday, April 15 and April 16 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m.

FuturPointe Dance, Rochester’s newest dance company, was formed in November 2009. FuturPointe co-director is Heather Roffe, AU class of 1994. She is also a choreographer and dancer at FuturPointe Dance, as well as visiting assistant professor of dance at the State University of New York at Brockport.

The five-member company will feature the work of multiple company choreographers, including pieces as aesthetically different as “Tangere,” an Argentine tango-inspired suite choreographed by Heather, and “Mashramani,” a blend of contemporary dance and Jamaican folklore choreographed by artistic director Guy Thorne.

Multimedia presentations of self-produced short films, as well as collaborations with local visual artists and composer/musicians complement the production.

A new work choreographed and set on the company by guest artist, Chris Walker, Assistant Professor at University of Wisconsin/Madison, will make its Rochester debut. The piece deals with issues of immigration, cultural displacement, urbanism, and competition. In February 2011, the company taught master classes and offered three sold-out performances during a residency at the University of Wisconsin/Madison. Lindsay Christians of The Capital Times, WI, who attended one of the performances, said: "The FuturPointe dancers... are electric, with deceptively relaxed movements and fabulous rhythms."
