AU softball team swept by Ithaca

HORNELL, NY -- The Alfred University softball team was swept by visiting Ithaca Saturday afternoon in the Saxon’ first Empire 8 Conferene games of the season. In the doubleheader played at Hornell High School, Ithaca took the first game, 6-0, then game back from an early deficit to win the nightcap, 4-1.

In the opener, Ithaca (13-5, 3-1 Empire 8) scored a run in the third, then added three more in the fifth before tacking on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Centerfielder Jennifer Biondi went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored and designated player Kelly Barger had three hits in four at-bats and drove in a run.

Freshman centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) and junior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) each hit doubles for AU (9-4, 0-2 Empire 8).

Bomber pitcher Allison Greaney scttered four hits and struck out three while walking none to earn the victory. AU senior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits and striking out four.

In the second game, AU took an early 1-0 lead when senior designated player Shanna Ewoldt (Tuscon, AZ/Waubansi Valley) hit a one-out solo homerun in the bottom of the first. Ithaca took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third, then added two more in the visitors’ half of the sixth.

Biondi was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two drivin in for Ithaca. Greaney had two hits, scored a run and had an RBI and rightfielder Julianne Vincent had two hits, including a triple, scored a run and drove one in.

Britt Lillie earned the pitching win for Ithaca, allowing one run on four hits and striking out two. AU junior Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits, while walking four and striking out one.

Alfred is in action next on Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader against visiting Empire 8 foe Utica.
