AU men’s lacrosse team pounds Caz

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-1 lead after one period then cruised to a 22-8 non-conference victory over visiting Cazenovia Tuesday afternoon at Merrill Field.

Junior attack Stefan Dabkowski (Latham, NY/Shaker) had a game-high seven goals and an assist to pace Alfred (9-2, 1-2 Empire 8), which dominated the contest before emptying its bench with a quarter to play. For the game, the Saxons outshot Cazenovia, 62-21; won 32 of 34 face-offs; and held a 54-27 advantage in groundballs.

Junior midfielder Jay Whyel (Markleysburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) had four goals and senior attack Marc Zoyhofski (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) had three goals and two assists for the Saxons, who led 15-2 at the half and 20-5 after three periods, and saw 11 different AU players score goals. Freshman attack Caleb McCaig (Corning, NY/Corning West) had a goal and three assists, and freshman midfielder Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) won 29 of 32 face-offs and picked up a career-high 23 groundballs while dishing out a pair of assists.

Sophomore Justin Becker (Conesus, NY/Livonia) played 37 minutes to earn the win in goal for AU. He made one save and allowed three goals before junior John Landi (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) took over and made four saves while allowing five goals in 23 minutes of action.

Jamil Modaffiri and Gareth Fanian each scored three goals and Jevon Pakkala had two goals and two assists for Cazenovia (4-6). Alex Iannicello played three periods in net for Cazenovia and made 15 saves while allowing 20 goals. Pat Boyle played the final quarter and allowed two goals while making three saves.

Alfred is in action next on Saturday, April 16, at 4 p.m. at Utica.
