HOBOKEN, NJ – The Alfred University softball team split an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader with host Stevens Saturday afternoon. The Saxons took the first game, 5-1. In the second game, they rallied from seven runs down over the final two innings to tie the game before Stevens scored in the bottom of the seventh for a 12-11 walk-off win.

In the opener, both teams scored single runs in the first before Alfred (11-6, 2-4 Empire 8) plated two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to close out the scoring and make a winner of senior pitcher Chelsey Cary (Corfu, NY/Pembroke). Junior Nicole Hedrick (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) led off the third with a double and with one out scored on a triple by junior third baseman Molly Shepherd (Camillus, NY/West Genesee). Freshman centerfielder Breeal Delgado (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) followed with a single to drive in Shepherd.

Hedrick was 2-for-2 with a double, a homerun, three runs scored and two RBIs, while Delgado (stolen base) and Shepherd each went 1-for-4. Cary allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out six and walking four.

In the second game, AU trailed 11-4 after five innings, but scored two runs in the sixth to make it 11-6, then rallied for five runs in the seventh to tie the game. Stevens answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring the game-winning run off Hedrick without making an out.

Alfred took its only lead of the game with a single run in the top of the second before Stevens plated five runs in the bottom of the frame. AU scored two in the third to make it 5-3, but Stevens took a commanding 11-4 lead with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. In Alfred’s seventh-inning rally, the Saxons scored five unearned runs, with sophomore second baseman (Coram, NY/Longwood) belting a two-run, two-out single to tie the game at 11-11.

Shepherd was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and junior leftfielder Angela Netta (Rahway, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) scored a run and drove in three. Senior first baseman Ashley Passaro (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) had three RBIs; Mistretta had a hit and drove in three runs; and Delgado was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and one driven in.

Hedrick took the pitching loss for the Saxons. She started and lasted one inning before Cary relieved with no outs in the second and pitched three innings. Cary allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out three and walking three before giving way for Shepherd in the fifth. Shepherd lasted just a third of an inning, allowing three earned runs on two hits and walking two. Hedrick relieved Shepherd with one out in the fifth and pitched the remainder of the game for the Saxons. She allowed six runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking six and striking out two over 2 2/3 innings. For the game, AU pitchers issued 11 walks and allowed 12 hits.
