Lady Saxons fall at Utica, 15-5

UTICA, NY —The Alfred University women’s lacrosse team fell to host Utica College, 15-5, Sunday afternoon in an Empire 8 contest.

Utica scored the games first eight goals until senior attack Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, NY/-Maine-Endwell) found the back of the net with 10:43 left in the first half. Each team would net a goal as AU went into halftime trailing the Pioneers 9-2.

The Pioneers started the second half with a five goal run to give them a 12 goal lead, their largest of the contest (14-2). The Saxons would score four of the games final five goals, to cap the scoring. For the game, Utica outshot AU 29-13, and held a 24-16 advantage in groundballs.

Sophomore attack Ali Garcia (Salt Lake City, UT/Judge Memorial), and freshman midfielder Ashley White (Islip, NY/Islip) each scored two goals to lead AU (2-9, 0-6 Empire 8). Caldwell finished with a goal and two assists.

Tammy Kohanski (three goals, five assists) and Katlyn Banker (three goals, two assists) combined to score 13 points lead the Pioneers.

Senior Kate Baughman (Rush, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made three saves in goal for Alfred. Shelby Barbay played the first half in goal and making two saves and Stephanie Belanger played the second half in net for Utica and had four saves (6-6, 3-4 Empire 8)

Alfred is in action next on Wednesday, April 20, at 4 p.m. at Elmira.
