AU to host book signing, reception for Howard’s ‘Entering Zen’

The Alfred University Bookstore will host a reception and book signing on Monday May, 2 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. for Ben Howard, emeritus professor of English, author of “Entering Zen.”

The essays collected in “Entering Zen” first appeared as columns in the Alfred Sun and contain many references to the Alfred community.

Allen Grove’s press, Whitlock Publishing, is publishing the book.

Howard is a long-time practitioner of Zen and Vipassana meditation. His previous books include “Leaf, Asphalt” and the verse novella “Midcentury.”
He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Drake University followed by a master of arts degree in English and creative writing from Syracuse University. In 1971 he received his Ph.D. in English literature from Syracuse.

Howard has received many awards through the years, including: Phi Beta Kappa, Excellence in Teaching at Alfred University, NEA Creating Writing Fellowship, and the Fred H. Gertz Chair in Writing.

Grove is a professor of English at Alfred University. He received his master of arts degree and Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania. He has several publications including the “Guide to College Admissions at About.com, a New York Times Company,” and “Afterword for the Delux Heirloom Edition of Pride and the Prejudice and Zombies.”
